Ecobirdy sets a new standard for sustainable design

The Antwerp-based ecoBirdy launched its first collection of chairs, tables, lamps and storage units in January 2018. All made from recycled toys. Ecobirdy has now won international fame and a large number of prizes for their products and underlying philosophy. With EcoBirdy, designers Joris Vanbriel and Vanessa Yuan demonstrate that design and sustainable production go hand in hand.

For the Charlie chair and the Luisa table, the designers chose a timeless design that is popular with both parents and children. Due to the robust material and the soft shapes, the chairs and tables from ecoBirdy are ideal for boisterous toddlers. But at the same time, the design is modern and stylish, making it a perfect fit for a mature interior.

Why ecoBirdy chooses discarded and broken plastic toys as a raw material for its products is crystal clear: No less than 90% of all toys are made from plastic, and 40% of these toys are no longer used after six months. EcoBirdy wants to break through that throwaway culture. The designers collect damaged or discarded toys in special containers in schools. A custom-made company collects the toys and sorts everything.

Ecobirdy has done 2 years of research to develop a production process in which the processed plastic remains fresh in color and gets its own crackle. This process is patented under the name ecothylene®. And of course the furniture from ecoBirdy itself is also fully recyclable.
