From the Mater Alder Series, the Alder Stool
The Alder collection is the crowning achievement of Mater's work to create design from residual material. Biodegradable, recyclable and super sustainable. Moreover, it is Design with a capital D because the Alder collection was designed by none other than Patricia Urquiola! She has developed a wonderful series of furniture with Matek™, developed by Mater. More about that later.
This Stool can be used both indoors and outdoors and is available in four colours: sand, terracotta, light green and earth grey. The material is reminiscent of mineral concrete or natural stone. Also available in the same series: square lounge table, oval lounge table and a side table.

Matek™ from Mater; cradle to cradle production
Extensive testing and productions has enabled Mater to develop a unique patented material that is biodegradable and as durable as wood, stone and plastic. It is also water-repellent and therefore suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Mater is able to make furniture from waste materials (both consumer waste and industrial waste) by combining fibers with a binder.Coffee bean shells, extracted during the roasting process, are an example of fibre material. Sawdust from wood production is another. The binder material is made from plastic waste or a plastic-based alternative. The mix of materials results in a unique compound suitable for press moulding - a well-known technique in the furniture industry. Through successful collaborations with large-scale companies, Mater helps to process waste streams and make them suitable for furniture production – which benefits everyone.
