Petite Friture Sandows Chair No. 212
The Sandows N°212 chair was designed by René Herbst around 1930. Petite Friture pays tribute to him by reissuing this chair and bringing it back to the heart of contemporary interiors.
The chrome-plated tubular steel frame and elastic cords create a minimalist, graphic seat with a very light appearance.
The elastic cords, Sandows in French, naturally conform to the shape of the body and offer ergonomic comfort, while giving the chair a timeless and airy look.
René Herbst was one of the first French designers to work with tubular steel. Between 1927 and 1937, he designed a whole range of furniture and interior items made of this material, which earned him the nickname L’homme d’acier (man of steel). He designed this chair around 1929/1930. The seat and backrest are made of elastic cords, called sandows in French, named after the founder of modern bodybuilding, Eugen Sandow. These cords have been used since the nineteenth century as part of expanders, popular fitness equipment. The extendable parts allude to the avant-garde's interest in body culture and hygiene.
