The most famous design by L. Ercolani is that of the Butterfly Chair. This iconic dining room chair designed by Lucian Ercolani was launched in 1956 and has since become a classic that is still very popular. The butterfly chair is also often used as inspiration for other designers. Ercolani was able to achieve the optimum balance between form and function by removing all unnecessary elements from the chair's construction creating a timeless design that is both elegant and compliant.
The distinctive shape of the BUTTERFLY CHAIR is reminiscent of the wings of a butterfly. The chair's simple, understated shape hints at the intrinsic piety of the Windsor-style furnishings that inspired Lucian Ercolani's early designs.
Gently rounded to embrace the body's natural contours, the steam-bent curves of the BUTTERFLY CHAIR invite users to sit down and enjoy a moment of comfort and tranquility. The BUTTERFLY CHAIR features the traditional Windsor wedge and pin connection, a technique where the legs of the chair are extended through the seat and secured with a wedge. These joints are then sanded until they are flush with the seat to create a strong and durable base, built to withstand the demands of everyday life.

L.Ercolani
Founded by Italian-born furniture maker Lucian Ercolani, the company rose to prominence in post-war Britain and marked a seminal chapter in mid-century design history. Ercolani established his business in the heart of High Wycombe, a traditional joinery in the Chiltern Hills of Buckinghamshire. It was there that the young designer first successfully industrialized the production of the Windsor chair, demonstrating a level of mechanical precision and ingenuity unheard of at the time. This innovative method of production, coupled with the innate purity and clean, architectural integrity of Ercolani's designs, propelled the company to nationwide success in the late 1940s.
