A work of art on a Lucie Kaas Kokeshi
“ I don't think about art when I am working. I think about life.”
Jean-Michel Basquiat
The Kokeshi dolls are made of Beech wood and meticulously hand painted by Becky Kemp. The dolls are sealed in a hard wearing Satin varnish for a smooth and tactile finish. The Sketch.inc for Lucie Kaas collection includes some of the most inspiring legends and icons within the fashion, art, music and cultural world.
This kokeshi is decorated with Basquiat's work "Evil Thoughts", which was originally painted in 1982
In his short 27 years, Jean-Michel Basquiat was one of the most influential artists of his time. Juxtaposing historical commentary, images, and text - his works had not only a visual, but poetic feel. Basquiat emerged from the 1980s neo-expressionist movement. Decades on, the themes explored through his artistry - inequality, racism and injustice - still find relevance today.
Kokeshi dolls originate in north-Japan. They are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face.
We have a large collection of dolls in stock.

Who is becky Kemp?
Becky Kemp is the artist behind the creative world of Sketch.Inc. Her work is inspired by geometric expression, Japanese illustrations and Nordic aesthetics. In 2015 she started to work with Lucie Kaas, a Danish company that has the same fascination for geometric expression and loves to tell the stories of the designers they represent.
